Okay, ladies! Chances are you’ve heard of microblading by now… but you may not be sure what it’s really all about! Or perhaps you’ve done your research and are still a little bit on the fence? A month ago, I was in the same boat. I went for it, and now I’m here to tell you ALL about it!
First of all… what the heck is microblading?!
Microblading is a semi-permanent procedure that involves using tiny needles to deposit pigment under the skin. It’s basically little tattoo’d eyebrow hairs! But, it’s not nearly as scary as it sounds. Rather than a tattoo gun, they use the tiniest needles that create a blade.
Okay… how does it work?
So, my experience started on Instagram. I saw an account from @michigan_microblading and her pictures were SO GOOD! When I first stumbled across her page, I wasn’t actively seeking out microblading. But, I was sick of my two totally different shaped eyebrows, and my bad attempts of filling them in. So, after a few weeks of watching her Insta, and photo after photo of impressive work, I reached out to her.
First of all… the owner, LoAnn, is the most adorable woman in the world. I honestly thought the photos of herself were stock photos. She is absolutely gorgeous and all of her photos were magazine-cover, Instagram-model, worthy. But, anyways, LoAnn responded right away, answered my questions, and we set an appointment. To say I was nervous is an understatement. I actually almost cancelled the appointment! But, her IG pictures just kept coming and kept looking amazing!
She sent me a list of pre-procedure rules. They were simple- like avoid Motrin and caffeine 24 hours before the appointment. When I got to her studio, I immediately felt comfortable. It was the cutest little studio, where she solely does microblading and eyelash extensions. LoAnn was SO nice… we chatted for a bit first, and then she explained exactly how the procedure would work. It started with her drawing the new shape. She is very meticulous in tis part of the process, as obviously it’s the most important. I wanted to maintain something natural, but to fill in the spots that were missing. After about thirty minutes, this was the shape that LoAnn said was right for my face.
She asked me if I was okay with it. I admit, I was a little nervous, as they seemed much fuller than I was used to. But, I figured she was the expert and went with it! (Had I not been happy with the shape, LoAnn would have been more than happy to make any changes I requested.) We then moved onto the numbing process. She applied a lotion-like numbing cream to my eyebrows, covered them in plastic wrap, and we waited about 15 minutes for the numbing effect to take place.
Once my eyebrows were numb, I laid back in the chair, she showed me the needle she would be using, and she got to work. I was pleasantly surprised- it was not painful at all. In fact, getting your eyebrows waxed is more painful! You can hear the faintest scraping sound as he needle swipes your skin, but it’s totally not scary or hurtful. The procedure took a good hour, as LoAnn was very careful and precise. Near the end, I could feel the numbing begin to wear off slightly. It still didn’t hurt… just maybe felt a bit swollen? She had told me if this happened to tell her, and she would apply more cream. But, we were almost done anyways, and it was totally bearable.
She micro bladed the little hairs, and finished the procedure with a an ombre effect. For this, she used a tiny gun that made a quiet humming noise. I felt nothing at all. And then… she was done! It was actually pretty relaxing. Riley (my 6 week old) even slept through the entire thing!
I was honestly SHOCKED when I saw the results. I honestly could not tell which was an actual hair and which was a microbladed hair without actually touching it! The results were so realistic and natural looking!
Now, I have to say, I had seen MANY other example of microblading that was not so realistic looking. Microblading is truly an art, and the results completely depend on the artist. So, do I recommend it? YES- I absolutely recommend LOANN!
It took a few weeks for my eyebrows to completely heal. I’ll be following up this post with a healing post later today, so you can see exactly what to expect in the healing process. I LOVE not having to fill in my eyebrows every morning, and love the shape that they have settled into.
The brow is typically about 20% bigger and bolder immediately after (and for the days following) than they will be once they are healed. After proper after-care, and a few weeks for them to heal/settle, they become a bit less bold. Check my Facebook or IG for recent pics!
Overall… so not scary, so not painful, and so worth it! The results should last for about 2 years. LoAnn will include the initial appointment, plus a free touch up appointment 4 weeks later, for no additional charge- just let her know you heard about her here!
